3 Days Later
Day 242 of 365: "3 Days Later"
I spent today helping clean out the basement of this home in Manville. Sadly, it was a finished basement...waterlogged rugs, furniture...and we even ripped out the walls because the paneling was destroyed. It was heartbreaking, knowing I was carrying bags of toys that belonged to a child in my daughter's daycare class.
But...I saw it everywhere. I wasn't the only one that went into town to help. My buddy Charles was out in the area getting cleaning kits and more from the Red Cross into the hands of the people who needed it.
It was a tough day...but I saw the best of humanity today.
But not PSE&G. Screw them for shutting off the power to this house that was functioning perfectly, which meant the sump pumps no longer have power and the basement we had just finally gotten dry...was flooding again. I learned that tonight almost another foot had come into the basement from below.
The sump pumps could have handled it...if only PSE&G hadn't cut the power.
But other than that...the rest of what I saw today, was friends, neighbors and family, working together.
Borne Back Ceaselessly Into The Past
That last time I went to the old house, it wasn’t what it once was. Where as once the woods that ringed the property echoed with the laughter of children and the porch held the chatter of adults enjoying their summer cocktails, now all was silent. The porch furniture was ratty and brittle and the paint was peeling off the sides.
It’s always hard to place a finger on when a house so once majestic began its slow slip, then quick tumble, into disrepair. Maybe it was that first time the stock market fell and with it, so many dreams. Or maybe it was that first time the screen door slammed shut in anger and frustration and those first thoughts crossed the mind - I’ve got to get out...
Now, with the sounds of those summer parties so long ago died out, along with many of those that had attended them, the house still stood, alone and neglected.
Maybe someone will buy up the property, fix it up, return it to it former grandeur. Or maybe the natural elements will continue their assault on the structure, determined to reduce it to a pile of dust.
